My new boots. Blessing #31
I’m not ashamed to admit that I have a real problem with jealousy and envy. I don’t know why. Maybe it stemmed from childhood, not enough time on the tit (actually no time, I went straight to the bottle). But at this point in my life it doesn’t matter. I just know I want things to change.
After an exhaustive search on the web (I’m kidding…go type in “jealousy” in Google and see what happens), I came across a post from Dr. Phil of all people. His slogan of “How’s that workin for ya?” really rang true on this one. It’s not workin for me at all, Dr. Phil. (You’ll find the link to his article at the bottom of my post.)
In Dr. Phil’s article he suggests, among other things, that you make a list of 100 blessings every day for seven days. And the blessings can’t be the same. You see, the problem with envy is that it has you looking at what OTHERS supposedly have instead of what YOU actually have.
As I sat in the waiting room, anxiously anticipating my name to be called to have blood drawn, I read Dr. Phil’s post and thought to myself, “I can do this.” So I did, right there in this room filled with strangers, I pulled out my iPhone, hit the NOTES app and started my list. It’s surprising how many blessings flow out of you at first. But then you have to stop and really think. What simple things do we take for granted? Suddenly, seemingly unimportant things become blessings.
For me, a big one was shoes. I was wearing a really cute pair of boots (see pic above) and thought I looked quite smashing for the early morning hour. As I admired my new purchase, I added it to the list. I thought about the thousands of people in the US and around the world who don’t have shoes. What a blessing they are to me.
Then I went a step further and added socks to my list. Seriously, if The World’s Softest Socks aren’t a blessing then what is.
I’m still working on my list for today, but I have to admit, ole Doc Phil knows his stuff. It lightened my mood. Focusing my attention all the blessings on my list instead of what I thought others had changed my thoughts. In the end that’s really the ONLY thing I have control over. And it’s also what brings on all the angst.
Shift your thoughts and you change your life.
So if jealousy and envy are an issue for you, then check out Dr. Phil’s post. And go start your 100 Blessings List today.
Send me an email and let me know what your most surprising blessing was. Best wishes and lots of love, cuz you all are a blessing I added to my list today.
