I posted this question on Facebook and I think we were all in agreement that some authors are getting RE-DONK-U-LUS with the prices they’re charging for ebooks. Some ebooks cost MORE than the actual paperback. WTF?
As an indie author I’m blessed (and cursed) to be able to set my own prices. I know traditionally published authors don’t always have that luxury. But that still doesn’t make it right, does it? Well, not to me anyway.
My biggest beef is when the author/publisher sets the first book in a series as free, but charges $7+ for the second book. And you NEED the second book to finish the story cuz #1 was a cliffhanger. Now, I know you’re saying…”Wait a minute Kay, isn’t that what you did with Skater Boy and My Skater Boy?” Well, yes I did, but…I promise to never run up the price on the second book to a sequel so much that I leave you and your bank account in tears.
So how much is too much? What’s the most you’ve paid (or are willing to pay) for an ebook? Me? I’d like to say $3.99…but don’t check my Amazon account because it will prove me a liar!
I know, charging a butt-load of money for an ebook isn’t fair. It’s like my brother told my daughter when she turned eight and NO ONE (and I mean NO ONE) sent her anything for her birthday (including him!)…. “Life ain’t fair, it’s better she learn it early!”
So in conclusion…
1. Some authors and publishers are charging way too much for ebooks
2. Idiots like me will still buy them thanks to our ONE-CLICK addiction (I hate one-click)
3. I’ll never admit to my one-click addiction, especially to my husband (and you better not either)
4. Life’s not fair…dammit! Keep reading everyone…just don’t go bankrupt in the process!
